Abstract

Natural products are considered as a possible source for the development of new drugs used in treatment of various ailments. As per the report by World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of world’s population mainly developing countries rely on traditional medicines for various types of diseases, however, the use of these herbal products is also increasing in western countries. Antioxidants are vital compounds with ability to protect the body from various damages which may be caused by free radical-induced oxidative stress. Plant derived products offers an important source of a wide variety of natural free radical scavenging antioxidants. The objective of the present study is to determine in vitro antioxidant ability of methanolic extract of Elaeagnus conferta (MEC) using DPPH and H2O2 methods. The results have indicated that MEC exhibits IC50 of 2.15 μg/mL and 8.58 μg/mL respectively in DPPH and H2O2 models which is comparable with standard anti-oxidant i.e. ascorbic acid. Therefore, the above study provides the preliminary information that E. conferta can be used in reducing oxidative stress.
