India shelters the most number of people with Diabetes mellitus worldwide. To study the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes in rural and urban population, a cross sectional survey was conducted among adults (30-70 yrs) in rural and urban population. For this study five villages were selected i.e. Venkata Krishna Puram, Numbur, Kantheru, Venkata Reddy Palem, Kaja and Mangalagiri. The prevalence of diabetes was highest in the urban areas of Guntur i.e., 39.2 %, lower in rural areas i.e. 12. 5% in Venkata Krishna Puram, 13.5% in Nambur, 8.4% in Kantheru, 1 1.8% in Kaja, 16.6% in Venkata Reddy Palem and 14.8% in Mangalagiri. Diabetic counseling was also given. Hence, this study revealed that, high prevalence of Diabetes mellitus was observed in urban areas and the impact of socioeconomic transition 'on the occurrence of Diabetes mellitus needs to be explored further.
