Abstract

In the present investigation study of gonads in relation to Gonadosomatic index (GSI) and Total length (TL) of fresh water catfish. Wallago attu, have been studied from Pune District, Maharashtra. The minimum GSI were observed in the month of January and February while the maximum GSI were observed in the month of June, .July, August. September, October and November. The highest values of GSI observed in the month of August may he attributed towards the peak period of spawning. The GSI provides an idea regarding the prespawning, spawning and post spawning season of the present fish from the study area. The maximum GS! were observed in the higher length group of fishes i.e.300 — 329 mm and minimum GS! were recorded in the lower length group i.e. 220-259 mm. In the present study GSI is found to be directly proportional to spawning season and inversely proportional to post-spawning season and it does not show any correlation with total length in the present fish.
